A peace offering
Marcus got home yesterday from a 4-day trip. He was really sorry for all the traveling he's had to do this year, so he had to make one more trip...to my favorite jewelry store in NW Portland:

The best gift of all, of course, is that he only has one day-trip scheduled in the next month! Ok, I'm lying, the ring is the best gift of all. ;o)

A royal affair
Back in the last week of April we went to a Royal Wedding Watch party--grammae had recorded the early-morning wedding of Will & Kate since we couldn't be there in person (it's not that the Queen didn't INVITE us of course, we just couldn't attend the wedding since we had prior commitments, yeah, that's it). So we did the next best thing. Grammae made a chocolate biscuit cake (the groom's cake):

RIP LTG
(Monday)
We lost a chick last night. :o(. Little Tough Guy had been sick since early last week and although he did recover for a day or two, he was worse the past few days. We tried separating him from the rest of the flock (they were walking on him) and giving him his own box, food, and medicated water, but even then he didn't thrive and he looked just as small as when we brought him home. The kids were growing attached to him and even though I tried to prepare them for the inevitable, they were still very sad.
We wrapped him in a cloth and we'll bury him later today for some closure. Bunny knew last night, and cried, but James didn't know until this morning when B or M must've told him. He went out to the garage on his own, to see for himself. I'm glad I wrapped LTG and put him back in his box, so James could reconcile and see that LTG was dead and not just "gone."
Meanwhile...the other 14 chicks are doing great. We moved them to the stall yesterday, using a borrowed brooder to keep them warm. I set up some boxes to make a smaller pen within the stall. We have visions of 6+ dozen eggs a week in the fall! I have a feeling we will be very popular come October or so.

Spring is finally here
Finally, it was nice enough to work in the garden this past week. Marcus mowed down the weeds to get the garden ready for tilling--we're going to see if we can go Round-up-free this year. The strawberry beds had to be hand-weeded but that was ok, I enjoyed the time outside. Gemma was napping, and I told myself I wanted to work so hard that I would be ~glad~ when she woke up and I had to take a break. I was!
These are Hoods, and we also have some very nice Tri-stars that has berries through September. They're all still in the vegetable garden but the master plan is to move them to their own bed, maybe near the play structure.
So next we (Marcus!) need to till compost into the garden, then the planting can start! Seeds: zucchini, pumpkins, lettuce, beans, more peas. Starts: tomatoes, eggplant, annuals...and whatever looks nice at the farmers market. :o)
