This was the site of a small but significant war with the Modoc Indians.
(The man on duty in the "museum" also did leatherwork and made all the gear on this horse! It was great talking with him.)
Next we searched for the headwaters of some river or another. Maybe one of my loyal blog readers can comment on what river it was. By this point in the trip Sedric and I were slowing down so we didn't join in on this short excursion but instead I sent the camera with Marcus:

It was the Wood River :-) The headwaters bubbled up from under the rocks in the hillside - pretty amazing that a huge river begins from under some little rocks! :-) My favorite tidbit from the Fort was that after it was abandoned, all the buildings were deconstructed for the timber - recycling in the olden days :-)
